[edit] Distinguishing between Muffins and Cupcakes

While there is argument between the difference between muffins and cupcakes, the simple answer is, in fact, not really simple at all. Muffins are bigger, and denser than cupcakes, and while muffins can be either sweet or savoury, cupcakes are only sweet, small and petite. Icing is a must on cupcakes; however on a muffin it just looks crass. Cupcakes are used for special occasions; muffins are more likely to be everyday fare.

English Muffins are not really related to muffins at all; in fact the term muffin shouldn’t really be applied to them.

The top of the muffin is also very important to correctly telling the difference between muffins and cupcakes: on cupcakes, the top isn’t really there, just a flat end of the cupcake, whereas on a muffin there is a definite, usually overflowing top to it. This is known as a muffin top, and the term can also be applied to people who wear too tight jeans.
