[edit] Announcement
Hi, and welcome to the newly started Arab world WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the Arab World.
The project birthday would be celebrated every August 24.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPARAB Announcements}} there.
- Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
- The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, and other tasks.
- Important notice
- We've developed a variety of guidelines for article structure and content, template use, categorization, and other issues that you may find useful. These guidelines can be subject of discussions at the project talkpage or simply WT:ARAB.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask User:FayssalF for the time being, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around!

[edit] Speedy deletion of Image:Almoravid Dynasty 1073 - 1147 (AD).PNG
A tag has been placed on Image:Almoravid Dynasty 1073 - 1147 (AD).PNG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Almoravid Dynasty 1073 - 1147 (AD).PNG|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Sdrtirs (talk) 23:07, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] April 2008
Please do not add copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder, as you did to :Image:Cairo - Mohandesin.PNG. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. [edit] Need help in translation
Can you help check if the Arabic translation of the following English text is correct? This bubble map shows the global distribution of visitors to the website wikipedia.org in 2008 as a percentage of the top market (USA - 97,852,576). This map is consistent with incomplete set of data too as long as the top market is known. It resolves the accessibility issues faced by colour-coded maps that may not be properly rendered in old computer screens.

- ROTFL! Google has to improve its algorithms fast. I wanted to upload output maps like these personalised for Arabic Wikipedia. So, I thought I could simply translate the English narrative from Google Translate and paste onto the map for re-use in Arabic articles.Anwar (talk) 15:25, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Image source problem with Image:Cairo Marriot.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Cairo Marriot.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:43, 11 April 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Geniac (talk) 17:43, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Qalawun
Marhaban Arab League, please don't redirect an old article to a new one, as you did with Qalawun. If you want the article to be placed at a new name, you need to use the "move" button, otherwise all the previous edits will be lost. I can help move it if there are other redirects in the way. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Cairo - Mohandesin.PNG
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Cairo - Mohandesin.PNG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VegitaU (talk) 03:11, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Actively online?
Hi. :) I see you edited a few minutes ago, and I wanted to see if you were actively still on Wikipedia. I'm looking for an Arabic-English translator to look over a couple of articles. I don't necessarily need a complete translation right now, but the contributor of these articles has already had one article tagged as an "attack" page, and I have no idea their contents. :D I'd be grateful if you are online if you can take a few minutes to let me know if they are a cause of concern. If they're not, they can remain in the translation line a bit longer. This is just a precaution. I'm watching your page. If I don't get a response in a few minutes, I'll presume you're either unavailable or not able to comply at this point, and I'll look to see if I can find another bilingual Wikipedian. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:27, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- Since you're editing and not answering, I'll presume you're not able to help. I'll head over to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Arab world. Thanks anyway. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:35, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, I didn't take you as rude! I just figured you were busy. :D After all, I sort of just popped up on your page with a request, and I know it may not be a good time. The short story: I need somebody who can read Arabic to glance at two articles (مكتبة الاسكندرية and القديس بولس) and see if they are okay or if they are attack pages. The creator of these has already had one article deleted as an attack page. He has also been blocked as having a vandalism only account. I just need to know if these articles need to be speedily removed from the encyclopedia because they're attack pages or if they're okay. If they're okay, they can stay in the list for translation until somebody has time to translate them through the regular procedure. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:40, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, and p.s., if these two are okay, I might also ask somebody to look over the one that was deleted. If it's not an attack page, then this editor may have been blocked without fair evaluation. If they aren't okay, then the block was probably fine. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:41, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you! We've got one that's okay, then--the first one. Would you consider the other one to fit the description of an attack page, "Pages that serve no purpose but to disparage their subject or some other entity (e.g., "John Q. Doe is an imbecile"). These are sometimes called "attack pages". This includes a biography of a living person that is entirely negative in tone and unsourced, where there is no neutral version in the history to revert to. Administrators deleting such pages should not quote the content of the page in the deletion summary, and if the page is an article about a living person it should not be restored or recreated by any editor until it meets biographical article standards."? --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:50, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- Unless you're really thinking it over, I'm going to guess that you're gone for now. :D Thank you again, so much, for your help. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:07, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:UAE - Abu Dhabi - Sheikh Zayed Mosque.jpg
Hi Arab League!
We thank you for uploading Image:UAE - Abu Dhabi - Sheikh Zayed Mosque.jpg, but there is a problem. Your image is currently missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Unless you can help by adding a copyright tag, it may be deleted by an Administrator. If you know this information, then we urge you to add a copyright tag to the image description page. We apologize for this, but all images must confirm to policy on Wikipedia.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Cairo - Mohandesin.PNG
Thanks for uploading Image:Cairo - Mohandesin.PNG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? VegitaU (talk) 00:25, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] username
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: Misleading username that implies misleading things about the contributor. For example, misleading impression of undue authority, or the suggestion that the account is operated by the Arab League. Group names are not allowed.. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?
I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.
You have several options freely available to you:
- If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
- If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Wikipedia administrators usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
- You can keep your contributions history under a new username. Visit Wikipedia:Changing username and follow the guidelines there.
Thank you. Kingturtle (talk) 18:08, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
i have actually been throught this issue with some other user, but i have cleaned my talk page recently, so it was gone with them...
my reasons are that its not possible for anyone to be misslead between my name and the Arab League article, simply because my page is called User:Arab League, second a whole wide community on Wikipedia knows me under this name, also its the name i Use in all other things that are related to Wikipedia, it will mean a bigger missleading affect then the one i have over wikipedia... i personally dont mind changing my username into something similar to Arab League like adding 86 (my birth year), etc... but the phrase Arab League must be included..
- Not all people in the community know you, and non-community members don't know you. There is the possibility for confusion over who you are. Changing your name is something worth considering. Keeping Arab League in there should be ok, as long as it discerns you from the real body. Kingturtle (talk) 10:52, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I am not against muslims but i am strongly against islam taking over the world. i think palestine will always be part of israel and lebanon is forever christian. I saw your userboxes and i am strongley against them all except 2,000,000 wrong reasons for the u.s. to invade iraq, as it was doing fine without them. Anyway, nice to meet you, i was wondering if you could tell me what is the most beautiful country in the middle east , i tink sanaa is loveley , but i need your opinion , and i am also going to egypt (hurghada) in aughust! =D Bezuidenhout (talk) 18:35, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Hello
I am very impressed with this image [1]. I have created many similar maps myself. I like your style. You seem to like the Arab League, the same way I like the EU. Also I agree with you over Palestine and Kosovo. I also oppose the war in Iraq. Just thought I might talk to you. ;) Ijanderson977 (talk) 22:16, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- I haven't uploaded my world maps haha, but i will do. Yeh im excited about going to Egypt, im going in just over 2 weeks. Im flying from London to Cairo with Air Egypt, so im spending 3 nights in the capital. Then im flying from Cairo to Abu Simbel, then im having a Nile cruise got seven days. Its probably a stereotypical British tourist trip of Egypt, but im still excited about seeing the country, there will be lots I wont get to see, but what I do see, I'll enjoy. It will be my second time in Africa. Its going to be good ;) Ijanderson977 (talk) 18:07, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
-
- I think i have added you on facebook. Yeh Egypt has historically been connected with Europe, ancient Greece, the Byzantine rule, even British mandate. This may sound like a silly question, but is Cairo similar to a European capital city? if you understand what i mean? Ijanderson977 (talk) 22:02, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks for the tip
Im sorry for starting this argument , it's just that i love israel and feel sorry for their race and i just believe they need a homeland, thats all... just 1 point , oil doesn't last forever ;) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bezuidenhout (talk • contribs) 17:53, 20 June 2008 (UTC) this is a map i strongley agree in [2] --Bezuidenhout (talk) 18:02, 20 June 2008 (UTC) just one more question , what template did you use for your map??
-
- i know oil isnt gonna last forever, i live in egypt, and not Saudi Arabia, plus you can feel sorry for israel as much as you please, but the simple fact is that palestinians are having a much harder time then israelis... the problem in the west is that they feel more related to israel then palestinians just because israelis live in a higher standard then the palestinians, that the israelis have the same lifestyle as the west, while they see palestinians living in shit holes, so they automatically remember africa and how millions of them die, and that its ok for thousands of poor people to die, but its not ok for 1 rich person to die..
[edit] Israel
it's not that i love 'them' its that i love israel, it's amazing how in just 60 years their wealth has outgrown their oil-rich neighbors, how the tiny population has dealt with a war with over 5 countries at once and not only won , but taken land from them , i admire them...
how did you find the map link i sent you? --Bezuidenhout (talk) 18:29, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

- Excellent work. Is there a way to remove the black background from the second medal? There's no policy but introducing it to WP:ARAB is common practice. You may need to discuss it on the project's talk page there with other participants. Awarding medals have to be announced there. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 18:03, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] redo figure
Could you rework this image please. It currently shows 6 comparisons in 1 column (thus 6 rows). This gives the whole file a very unfavorable aspect ratio. My suggestion would be to simply put them in 2 columns (each then having 3 rows). If you are going do this, it would be nice if you put the re-worked version on Arab League. Thanks.
PS: It might be a good idea to compare the size of the Arab League to China and not greater China. These kind of things can only seed irrelevant disputes in the future--irrelevant because what we want to do is simply a size comparison and not a political statement.
PPS: Another idea would be to make simply less comparissons. I think Russia, USA, and EU would be sufficient. Thanks again. Tomeasytalk 17:59, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

-
- i agree with the greater china part, i shouldv made it clear to compare it with china, as for the sufficiency, i believe the more their are comparisons the better, and i believe my choices are more or less good, for example, i included Turkey to be compared with the EU.
-
--Arab League User (talk) 15:19, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

-
- What do you mean with Turkey? I can't see it on any of the maps.
- Do you think you could layout the 6 comparisons in 2 columns by 3 rows and upload this to the AL article? As it is now, we have to shrink the thump too much, so that its content is hardly visible. Inflating it as it is to a reasonable size, however, would make the image span through multiple sections. So, if you really think it is necessary to make a size comparisons to Brazil, USA, Canada, and China -- which all have approximately the same size, that's why I think we can save three of them! -- then, a rearrangement of the cases would constitute a great improvement. Tomeasytalk 15:38, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

-
- umm, yeah i guess... as long as you dont disclude the main blocks (USA, EU, Russia and Arab League)
but what exactly did you have in mind?? --Arab League User (talk) 20:48, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
check my Maps page...
the comparison maps is too small, and needs to include other bigger countries and blocks.. --41.235.163.120 (talk) 22:41, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Do you have a problem with indentation? Actually, I do not care much about the other comparison maps, because we only want to show AL comparisons on the AL article.
- Anyway, why do you think the AL must be compared to so many countries whereof 4 have almost the same size? I do not see added value in that, but rather cluttering of the page and producing a bad aspect ratio. Why did you not react on the AL talk page in the section that I opened regarding this map? Why did you not rearrange the 6 comparisons in 2 by 3 to improve the aspect ratio? What did you mean by Turkey? What about the GDP map of the AL? Did you not see any of the many discussions that I started about its inconsistencies at many different places?
- So far I see only contra-productive comments here but no work being done so far and I indicated so many things that have to be improved. I know that I cannot tell you what to do; we are all volunteers here. But if you work slow and lack precision then at least do not hinder the improvements that I am trying to add to the AL article. I look forward to a more working and less arguing cooperation. I am not here to have long discussions. I want to work on articles and do the obvious things to improve them. Tomeasytalk 23:03, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

- wow wow wow... i dont understand whjy your tone suddenly became very angry, and started blaming me for being a slow worker, but believe it or not, some other people that contribute in Wikipedia do have a life, even tho i believe im the number 1 contributor of the Arab world maps, and i have also greatly contributed in the Persian Historical Maps, as well as African, Asian and Colombian maps, as well as my creation of several images, and articles, i dont think you should expect people to contribute 100% of their effort in Wikipedia all year round, you need to understand that people travel, have exams, and other stuff that sometimes keep them away from the Internet, or give them small amount of time online, so they cant contribute, and fix stuff, but rather comment, on others...
plus, im not arguing, and obviously you did not see the other maps, which includes Turkey... plus i created around 100 maps, and its pretty hard to check the discussion board every time i loggin... i dont understand you... i hope their is a miss-understanding, and that your sudden anger represents something else then what i just explained... because it wont be fair to judge people as lazy because they didn't change the a map on the way you believe should be done...
ps: please do not get intouch with me anymore, if you will not maintain politness, pps: check the top line in my talk page.. peace be with you --Arab League User (talk) 16:42, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- In deed, I think there is a misunderstanding. The fact that you have other things to do is none of my business and I am the last one to tell you what to do and when. Therefore, you do not have to defend yourself telling how many things you have contributed already. I've had a look on your gallery some time ago and I know it's a lot, but not the point.
- What made me upset is the following: Instead of casting your efforts into the comments and suggestions that I have raised about your maps, you decided to say 'no' here and 'but' there, give excuses, and redirect me to other works of yours. If you have little time, then at least let me work. You did not react to all the comments and suggestions that I put on various pages regarding your images. But once I ask you, if I may alter one of them myself you raise this and that objection. That's why I (over)reacted above. So many times I asked for a constructive reaction but you only acted when there was a chance to be destructive.
- The GDP map is one example, it is used multiple times on wikipedia and I think this map is of high priority. It has dozens of flaws that need to be fixed and cannot be presented as it is now. I started contacting you for it 1 month ago. It's OK if you do other things on wikipedia instead of turning towards my comments. You are the master of your time, see your contribs. But was holding up my efforts on the size comparison map really more important than working on the GDP map. It is of course not up to me to decide on this question, but it is up to me to feel uncomfortable if you set your priority to the former.
- Bottom line: I got irritated, because I received your first interaction with me negative. I felt that you are trying to hold me up. This irritated me because there was ample opportunity for you to start our interaction in a constructive way. I hope this was just a bad start. I know, nobody likes being told a lesson and I was not trying to do so. I am sorry if it sounded that way and I hope that we cooperate more constructively from now on. Tomeasytalk 18:04, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
i dont hold you responsible for your over reacting, i know i have been far from wikipedia lately, due to several issues varieng from Sickness, to traveling to studying, and i have not been cooperative might i add, anyways, we have a sying in the Arab world that says, no friendship but after conflict... so i hope this is the case here...
anyways, as for the GDP map, ill fix this immidatly, ill use the form used by the monetary fund
, and the others, that are all found in List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita
cheers...
--Arab League User (talk) 18:55, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the nice words, especially the Arab saying. And again, do things when you feel like, not when I push you :-)
- I think the old map was not per capita values, even though I was am not 100% sure, because the legend was incomplete. If you make a per capita map now, be sure this will be indicated clearly along with a PPP identifier, the unit scale, and the source of the data. I think a per capita map is equally interesting, perhaps even more interesting. So good luck with it. Tomeasytalk 19:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Question about the Arabs Diaspora.PNG image
(This one:)
Hi - the image description says you created the map itself - I was wondering if I could convince you to change the color key. Just from regular conventions, it is weirdly colored - with colors like black, red, and orange, most people would, at a glance, assume that the brightest, most saturated color (bright red or yellow) would designate areas with the highest values, so that at first blush, I think most people would assume that the U.S. had very few Arabs and Canada had a very high number. I think it would be clearer if it went black->red or black->yellow->red, or blue->green->yellow->red, or something like that. Kjl (talk) 00:43, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
well, i took the colors from some other maps on wikipedia... im guessing it differes from one person to another, i mean, you might get confused by this map, while other might be confised by a map like your proposal, anyways, im very bussy now a days, but i give you the rights to change what you want in the map... cheers :)
