Sangrita

Sangrita is a cocktail mixer based on tomato juice that is often sipped alongside tequila. Not to be confused with sangria, a fruit and wine concoction, Sangrita is a spicy, tangy mixture of tomato and orange juices, usually spiked with hot chiles and lime juice.
Generally sangrita is served with blanco tequila, but it can also accompany reposado. The tequila and sangrita are each poured into a separate shot glass (or caballito) and the two are alternately sipped, not chased. First the tequila, then the chilled sangrita.
Playboy magazine provided a simple and common recipe:[citation needed]
- 8 oz. tomato juice
- 1 oz. orange juice
- 1 oz. grapefruit juice
- 1 oz. lime juice
- 4–6 drops Tabasco sauce
A traditional recipe is
- 2 parts tomato juice
- 1 part orange juice
- 1/2 part lime juice
- Jalapeño to taste
There are many recipes for sangrita, but most contain tomato juice, lime juice, pureed onion, salt, and chili sauce. The drink is popular in the home state of tequila, Jalisco.
It is used a drink known as The Mexican Flag. Separate double shot glasses are filled with sangrita, tequila, and lime juice and sipped.
In some areas of Mexico, it is used in a cocktail called Vampiro (vampire). It is served in a salt-rimmed highball glass with 3-5 ice cubes: 1.5 oz tequila, 1/2 ounce lime juice (or juice of 1/2 a small Mexican lime), 2 ounces sangrita and filled with grapefruit soda (Fresca or Squirt, sometimes omitted). For a stronger taste add a few drops of Tabasco sauce.
