Phoenix Art Museum (also known simply as "PAM") is the largest and primary institution of visual art in the Southwestern United States. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the museum's collections trace their origins back to 1912 when the Phoenix Woman’s Club and Arizona State Fair Committee decided to develop a fine arts program. The first painting in the collection was bought in 1915, and by 1925 the Phoenix Fine Arts Association was officially formed. The association's first permanent museum was established in 1936 as the Phoenix Art Center, by the Works Progress Administration, as part of the Federal Art Project. It was later renamed the Phoenix Art Museum. Philip Campbell Curtis was the founding director.
The Phoenix Art Museum has been designated a Phoenix Point of Pride. [1]

The museum moved to its present location in 1959 at Central Avenue and McDowell Road, in what is known today as Midtown Phoenix. The original facilities were designed by architects Alden Dow and Blaine Drake. In 1995, the art museum expanded into the old Central Library, which was located next to the 1959 museum building. In 2006, the museum added a new, expansive modern art wing and a new entry pavilion facing Central Avenue. Both the 1995 and 2006 expansions were designed by New York City-based Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, placing the current size of the museum at nearly 210,000 square feet (20,000 m2).
