In this Vietnamese name, the family name is Phạm, but is often simplified to Pham in English-language text. According to Vietnamese custom, this person should properly be referred to by the given name Hùng.

Phạm Hùng (* Vinh Long, June 11, 1912 – Hanoi, March 10, 1988) was the Prime Minister of Vietnam from 1987 to 1988.

Phạm Hùng was born on June 11, 1912, in Vinh Long Province, now called Cuu Long Province, in the Mekong River Delta of southern Vietnam.

He joined the Indochinese Communist Party in 1930 and he was sentenced to death by the French before having the sentence commuted. He worked as a revolutionary against the French and after the Battle of Dien Bien Phu rose rapidly in the party. In 1958 he became Deputy Prime Minister.

During the Vietnam War he acted as comissar to the Vietcong. He also served as Interior Secretary before his relatively brief period as Prime Minister.[1]
