Mantak Chia (謝明德, born 1944) is an author, teacher and self-described healer. He is best known for his books and teachings on Taoism and qigong. Mantak Chia is a controversial figure in Taoism, alternately praised for public disclosure of long-held secrets and condemned for idiosyncrasies such as a heavy focus on Taoist sexual practices[citation needed]. Mantak Chia claims to make esoteric Taoist practices more accessible to a modern Western audience[citation needed]. He has closely worked with several students with a background in Western esoteric studies, especially Michael Winn, Eric Yudelove and Dennis Lewis.[1]
Born in Bangkok to Chinese parents, Chia was born into a Christian family and identifies himself as Christian as an adult. His father was a Baptist minister.[2] His wife Maneewan Chia is the co-author of many of his books. Mantak and Maneewan Chia live in Thailand and have one child.[3]

[edit] Practices
Mantak Chia teaches a variety of qigong and neigong practices, including Iron Shirt, and Tao Yin. Fusion of the Five Elements is a central neidan practice that is intended to balance qi.[4] Fusion of the Five Elements is the first level of meditation in a broader practice, called Fusion of the Five Forces in the Universe, that aims to balance the five elemental forces and align the practioner with cosmic forces through a series of "heaven and earth" exercises. The microcosmic orbit, or "waterwheel" exercise, is a central technique used to channel and circulate qi in many other exercises. The principal aim of most practices Chia advocates is the balancing of energy and the creation of spiritual alchemical "inner elixirs". The southern school of Complete Reality Taoism in which the practices originate states that the exercises provide only temporary benefits and merely assist in reaching enlightenment, while Chia asserts they may lead to spiritual and physical immortality. These practices are related to what Chia calls the "Immortal Tao".[5]
In 1994 Master Mantak Chia moved back to Thaliand, where he the began construction of Tao Garden and Universal Tao Center [6] In December 2000 the Tao Garden Health Resort and Universal Tao Center.[citation needed]
