Archduke Karl of Austria (Karl Thomas Robert Maria Franziskus Georg Bahnam von Habsburg-Lothringen) Prince Imperial of Austria and Prince Royal of Hungary,[1] (born 11 January 1961 at Starnberg, Bavaria, Germany) is the son of Otto von Habsburg and Princess Regina of Saxe-Meiningen and the grandson of the last Austrian emperor, Charles I. Karl is the current head of the Austrian branch of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
None of Habsburg's titles are recognised in Austria, where he is referred to as Karl Habsburg or Karl Habsburg-Lothringen, which is his legal name. (See Austrian nobility)
Karl Habsburg is the founder and president of the organization Paneurope-Austria (1987). On 13 October 1996, he was elected to the European Parliament (Austrian People's Party). Since 19 January 2002, he has been the Director General of UNPO (Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization). Habsburg has also had a short lived career as a host of a TV game show with Austrian public TV broadcaster ORF, called Who-is-Who.
In January 2007, his father relinquished to him his status as the Head of his House.[2]
[edit] Private life
Archduke Karl has lived in Salzburg, Austria, since 1981. On 31 January 1993, he married Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, the only daughter of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, a European industrialist and his second wife, Fiona Campbell Walter. Archduke Karl and Francesca separated amicably in 2003.[citation needed] They have three children:
- HI&RH Archduchess Eleonore Jelena Maria del Pilar Iona of Austria (born Salzburg, 28 February 1994)
- HI&RH Archduke Ferdinand Zvonimir Maria Balthus Keith Michal Otto Antal Bahnam Leonhard of Austria (born Salzburg, 21 June 1997), who is heir after his father of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen.
- HI&RH Archduchess Gloria Maria Bogdana Paloma Regina Fiona Gabriela of Austria (born Salzburg, 15 October 1999), whose godmother is Gloria, Princess of Thurn and Taxis.[citation needed]
Extended royal family

All noble, royal, and imperial titles are illegal in Austria, so the country and its citizens do not recognise the titles of Archduke Karl and his family members.
The Archduke was also mentioned in the media for importing jewelry from Switzerland to Austria without disclosing it to customs officials. The jewellery belonged to his wife and she was supposed to wear it at a wedding ceremony.[citation needed]
Karl and his wife reside in Casa Austria, formerly Swoboda Villa, in Anif, Salzburg, Austria.[citation needed]
