Ian Martin

Ian Martin, from the United Kingdom, is a human rights activist who has been involved in a number of human rights organisations. He is currently the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Nepal for the United Nations Mission in Nepal.
In the aftermath of his time serving as Head of the UN Mission in East Timor he became infamous within the international community for leaving back an injured mission member without any medical assistance in a remote area close to Maliana, East Timor.
He has been:
- Secretary-General of Amnesty International from 1986 to 1992.
- Director-General of The UN/OAS International Civilian Mission in Haiti, 1993 and 1994-5.
- Chief of the UN Human Rights Field Operation in Rwanda, 1995-96.
- Deputy High Representative for Human Rights in the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1998-99.
- Special Adviser to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Human Rights Field Operations, 1998.
- Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the East Timor Popular Consultation and Head of the UN Mission in East Timor May-November, 1999.
- Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, 2000-2001.
- Representative in Nepal of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, 2005- 2006.
- Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Timor-Leste, 2006.
- Head of United Nations Mission to Nepal(UNMIN).
