Geological and geophysical engineering

Geological and geophysical engineering is the engineering science of applying engineering principles to the study of earth materials as part of the engineering design of facilities including roads, tunnels, and mines especially as related to minerals and mineral products. Some see it as a merging of the disciplines of earth sciences and engineering and materials science, but, while it includes aspects of all, it has several specializations unique to the field.

Geological and geophysical engineers are particularly prized in the field of mining, including the fields of mine development, exploration, and operation. Geological/geophysical engineers conduct slope stability analyses, and design remediations for unstable slopes including landslides for mining concerns and civil engineering projects. They are involved in both civil and mining tunneling projects. Some geological/geophysical engineers choose to specialize instead on geotechnical or environmental aspects of the field.

Geological Engineering is a relatively new discipline and for the time being only some institutions of USA, Canada, Turkey and Pakistan are offering degree in Geological Engineering. In Pakistan only the University of Engineering and Technology is offering a bachelor degree in Geological Engineering [1]. A bachelor degree in Geological Engineering is the basis of careers concentrating on the interaction of humans and the earth. Geological Engineering deals with a wide variety of the resource and geotechnical problems that come with accommodating more and more people on a finite planet. Foundations for surface structures such as dams, buildings, roads, under-ground structures i.e. tunnels, shafts and caverns must be properly evaluated, stabilized and monitored. Groundwater and water supplies not only properly located but also developed and contaminated sites are characterized before cleanup. New energy resources must be located and developed in an environmentally sound manner. Geological Engineers are the professionals trained to meet these challenges. Geological Engineers from University of Engineering and Technology are serving the nation as a geotechnical engineers, construction engineers, site engineers, and as geologists in both national and multinational companies. In Petroleum industry, Geological Engineers have also proved themselves as drilling engineers, well site geologists, geophysicists, mud loggers and completion engineers.
