[edit] Activities
Responsibility for an April, 1984, wave of killings was claimed by the Dashmesh Regiment, a previously unrecognized group of Sikh terrorists that counts moderate Sikhs as well as Hindus and the government among its sworn enemies. Sikh militants lobbed hand grenades into a religious house near their holy city of Amritsar, killing four and injuring 31. In many Punjab towns, terrorists on motorcycles shot up cars, banks and people in the streets. Two Hindu political leaders, both national figures, were gunned down. By week's end 23 had been killed and 80 injured. [1]
Dashmesh Regiment claimed responsibility for a July 1, 1985 bomb hidden in luggage bound for India. The bomb exploded in the international airport terminal of Rome's airport, injuring fifteen baggage handlers. The luggage arrived either from Beirut or from Athens. The suitcase was to be loaded on an Italian Alitalia flight to New Delhi.[2]
