Czecho-Slovakia

The term Czecho-Slovakia (in Czech and Slovak Česko-Slovensko) was the official short-form name of Czechoslovakia during several periods of its history:

  1. 1918 to 1920 (according to some sources until 1923)
  2. late 1938 to March 14, 1939
  3. April 1990 to the dissolution on December 31, 1992

The name was originally conceived to be the equivalent of the name "Austria-Hungary", however the term was mostly in general disuse and the simpler term "Czechoslovakia" (official for most of the nation's history) was preferred. Today, Czechoslovakia is known as "Czechoslovakia" (Czech: Československo) according to official Czech spelling rules, while it is still known as "Czecho-Slovakia" (Slovak: Česko-Slovensko) and "Czechoslovakia" (Slovak: Československo) official Slovak spelling rules.
