[edit] Early life and background
Newmark graduated from Morristown High School, in Morristown, New Jersey, in 1971.[1] Upon graduation he attended college at Case Western Reserve University for a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
[edit] Career
Newmark is a vocal advocate of keeping the Internet free. He has donated $10,000 to a non-profit group, NewAssignment.Net, which plans to combine the work of amateurs and professionals to produce investigative stories on the Internet.[2]
Newmark resides in San Francisco's Cole Valley and is active at Craigslist in customer service, mostly dealing with spammers and scammers.[3]
On April 25 2009, Newmark stated Craigslist would not remove the 'erotic' section from its website. Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal had requested he change the section by removing pictures and screen pictures and ads that violate Craigslist's terms of service.[4] Similar calls by community groups had arisen in recent months after an MSNBC program linked Craiglist with prostitution in various US cities.[citation needed]
