The Gweno are an ethnic and linguistic group based in the northernmost part of the Pare Mountains in the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. In 2000 the ethnic Gweno population was estimated to number 2,000, with the nearly extinct Gweno language spoken by all but Christians have the advantage of knowing Asu as they use it in their churches [1].

Gweno, a derivative of 'Gwen', is also a Welsh female forename meaning 'shining' or 'smile', which also takes the form 'Gwenno'.
